Who is the best prospect in the this year's draft?
I would leave out the pitchers as I do not see any game changers coming from the mound. Yes, there are some great first round arms; I just don't see anyone worthy of being on top of the draft.
The player with the biggest upside is 1b Jack Fournier. He is 21 and has the ability to be the best player ever to play 1b. The problem is he plays 1b. 1b is a position where you can put that great hitter that can't play defense (or so the wisdom goes). Whether it is true or not, you have to stick that guy some where and why not first base? If he prospers, Jack could hit .350 year in and year out.
2b Bill Kenworthy plays a very desirable position and could be the guy who takes over the position from Nap Lajoie (who he is often compared to). Bill is 24 and not yet fully developed. He can bat .280-.300 right now, but his huge upside is still ahead of him. The worry is he may be too old to ever live up to his hype. He could slide far as many scouts feel he might be done developing.
CF Benny Kauff is the rare mix of contact and doubles. Kauff can play all 3 outfield positions and is likely to be a doubles machine. He could be the perfect #2 hitter in a lineup. While everyone is trying to get that number 3 hitter, having a great #2 hitter can be the difference between the top half of the division or the bottom half. If you have a great number 3 hitter, take Kauff and win some ball games.
3b Heinie Groh plays a very rare position and might be too good for many teams to pass up. Groh could go #1 over all based on his talent and his position may be too good to pass up. Groh is a fast runner and will steal a lot of bases (especially for a 3b).
