National League:
Brooklyn Superbas vs St. Louis Cardinals
Superbas won 110 games in a very weak division, but the Cardinals won 127 to break the all time record. The Cardinals are by far the best team ever assembled and are trying to become the best dynasty ever. Another trip to the World Series may be just the ticket. In another year, the team led by Nap Lajoie (.335 4 HR 76 RBI) and Tom Hughes (26 wins, 1.61) may have been a favorite for the World Series, but not this year and not against this team. The Cardinals are stocked top to bottom and led by 3 30 game winners: Fred Arellanes (34), Chappie McFarland (33), and Frank Smith (33). The Cardinals have an offense led by Tris Speaker (.358) that just cannot be stopped.
Game 1:
The Superbas are sending Dummy Deegan to the mound against Chappie McFarland for the Cardinals. Now, this is the type of match up we were waiting for in the playoffs. This should be a pitching duel to the end.
Dummy ended up being a late scratch and Tom Hughes pitched a complete game giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. Chappie was just a tad worse giving up 11 hits on 4 earned runs over 8 innings. Hughes was named player of the game and stepped in wonderfully for Dummy who it was never explained why he was pulled at the last minute. 13,019 fans showed up in St. Louis to root on their hometown club. The Cardinals are down a game, but hardly out.
Game 2:
The Superbas have the momentum and hope to keep things going. They would love to return to Brooklyn up two games and have the Cardinals up against the wall. Yet, most think the Cardinals are way too good for that and expect a big win tonight.
The Superbas are sending former Cardinal thrower Charlie Case to the mound against probable Best Pitcher of the Year Frank Arellanes. These former teammates are the best of friends and could know each other better than anyone else in the league. The Superbas manage went with another quick switch putting Dummy Deegan into pitch at the last moment and sparing us the perfect storyline we all were waiting to see. Deegan pitched a complete game giving up 1 run to many (3 runs, 2 ER). Arellanes one upped him going 9 IP and giving up 2 ER being named Player of the Game. The Superbas have been able to keep the Cardinals offense in check except for 2b Eddie Collins and C Ted Easterly. This is the sort of game the Superbas have to win while the Cardinals big bats are sleeping. The series moves to Brooklyn tied at 1 game a piece.
Game 3:
Everyone was surprised with the Superbas beat the Cardinals and the big question around the league is whether they can do it again. Would anyone have guessed the Naps and Superbas in the World Series? No, and no one is betting on that. The Cardinals are sending ace Frank Smith to the mound (33-10 1.65) against the Ace of the Superbas Tom Hughes (26-4 1.61) which is a pretty even matchup. This is the sort of match up in World Series history that should be talked about decades from now.
The Superbas made another last minute change putting Charlie Case on the mound in the first inning and it once again paid off in spades. The pitching duel we have been waiting for was just delivered. The Superbas won the game with a 2-1 score. Case ended up pitching the entire game and only gave up a single run on 8 hits. Since leaving the Reds, he has become a dominator on the mound. The Cardinals have to regret letting him walk last off season. Smith pitching a great game, but the two runs he gave up were just too much.
Game 4:
The Superbas are leading the series 2-1 and with one more victory the Cardinals could lose their grip on the series. The Cardinals had the best record of any team in PBA history and were widely considered the greatest team in PBA history, but a NLCS loss will not cement their place in history. Are they the best regular season team of all time or the best team? This could be a discussion for the ages if they lose this series. The Cardinals send Chappie McFarland to the mound against B. Veli.
The Cardinals showed up in Game 4 to showcase why they are who they are. With a huge 7th and 8th inning, the Cardinals re-established the team as a true contender. 15,315 fans showed up (one of the largest in PBA history) to watch one of the greatest teams. McFarland pitched a good (not great) game giving up 3 ER in 9 IP. Veil pitching adequate, but the 10 hits and 6 runs killed their chance of staying in this game. The series is now tied at 2 games each and the Cardinals seem to be getting their confidence back.
Game 5:
The Cardinals and Superbas are tied 2-2 and right now the Superbas have faith, even without their superstar SS. Frank Smith (0-1 2.25) will match up well against Dummy Deegan (0-1 2.08) and what an even match up this is.
Even though Frank Smith pitched his heart out giving up 3 runs in 9 IP, late addition Tom Hughes only gave up 1 run and that makes the Superbas the winner. Hughes told the press before the game that he would carry the team all day if the offense would just score a couple of runs and he was true to his word. 15,587 fans in New York showed up to root on their hometown team.
Could you imagine two underdogs making the World Series? Both powerhouses might go home? What the heck?
Game 6:
The Cardinals have their backs up against the wall and are sending ace Fred Arellanes (1-0 2.00) to pitching against former Cardinals Charlie Case (1-0 1.00). The Superbas made another last minute pitching change to put Dummy Deegan on the mound.
The Cardinals just didn’t have it today. Arellanes pitched a good game going 8.2 IP giving up 0 ER, but the 4 errors translated into 6 total runs (on only 6 hits). Deegan on the other hand pitched like a true legend. He has one a championship with the Highlanders even though he can’t speak he is leading this team to their first World Series. Nap Lajoie has played brilliantly and was named MVP of the NLCS.
