With the draft, the experiment to fit Morrie Rath at short may be over. The Sox had Roger Peckinpaugh ranked #3 on our board - not that he's any good, our scouts simply didn't see anyone else any better. He can play short without embarrassing himself, and at 18 years old he has plenty of time to learn how to be embarrassed.
So, if Rath is going to play in the pros it's going to be at 2B. That means either third, DH or another team for Heinie Zimmerman. Still time to think that one over. There's no plan to rush Rath onto the field.
Stimmel continues to pitch like a man who wants more than $1,500 in his next contract. The Sox management is content to keep him hungry for now: no serious discussions for an extension yet.
He and Fisher are the only starters with much of a spark. The Sox are last in the AL in ERA. There are hopes that Siever will be a significant pickup. That still leaves Bracken, Hughes or Polchow in the rotation somewhere. One of them needs to remember what they were doing right in '08.
The AL East seems as tough as ever. It feels like the last three seasons all over again, and the Sox only won one of those battles. Still a long way to go in this round.
