This year doesn't feel too different from the recent past. Fast start, quick settle into a reasonably positive consistent level. A few more wins along the way, enough to hold down first place thus far.
And it's first place or bust once again. The AL East (and AL aggregate for one fateful year) has left the Sox feeling a bit bruised and less than best. Who knows if this year marks a significant change?
1908 is the real-life year that Jerry Freeman set the all-time AL record for most errors by a first baseman in a season, with 41. Bosox 1B Emil Frisk has 22 errors in 33 starts. The GM is pretty sure he's not going to let Frisk threaten the record, even with his 300+ BA. The only way the Sox can justify four 1Bs on the roster is to admit that only one of them should be seen in public with a glove on his hand.
Further afield, SS Freddy Parent apparently now has all the range of the "I've Fallen and Can't Get Up" Madam, raising doubts about his ability to garner another Gold Glove.
Morrie Rath was on track to learn the position in AAA, until he injured himself in a horrendous duckpin ball-return catastrophe earlier this month. He's down til Spring Training 09. Quote from the all experts encyclopedia, "According to baseball statisticion Bill James, Rath's defensive range numbers were the best in the league, and off the charts for his era." Not so sure how much to trust those experts, given their spelling, but Bill James is a Bosox employee, so he should know. In the OOTP present Rath is suffering from Stuffy McInnis disease - he's listed as a shortstop, with an overall defensive rating of 18... at second base. He'd built himself up to a 3 at short when disaster split.
In news from the mound, Rube Kisinger is already lobbying for a 10K+ arbitration salary. The GM hopes Rube enjoys his imminent free agency. He's bound to join a few other Bosox as over-greedy arbitrationists, no matter what kind of playoff run the team may rip through.
Tom Fisher will no doubt get what he wants from the off-season. He continues to pitch over the heads of men twice his size. His Baseball-Reference.com page indicates a 6-16 career record. Another fun note, his second best similarity score is OOTP Bosox teammate Archie Stimmel. Dale Gear is also in the top ten.
The GM is very pleased to see ticket sales are up and fan interest isn't far behind. Johnny Bates Bobblehead Day was a marketing coup. No spending spree beyond Fisher is anticipated, though, unless Davy Crockett's $3,000 extension counts. And even that is up in the air. Lots of time still, for all sorts of decisions. Most important of which, when to stop blathering and go to bed.
