World Series:
World Series: Cincinnati Reds vs. New York Highlanders:
Pre Game 1:
The New York Highlanders and the Cincinnati Reds have met in the World Series before and the Highlanders won their second World Series. That year, the Reds were the best in league and the Highlanders barely made the playoffs. This year, the Highlanders are the best team in the PBA (tied with Pirates for best record) and the Reds barely made the playoffs (having to win a one game playoff). The Reds have already blasted the Pirates and now they face the Highlanders (both teams are tied for the best record in the PBA). In this years playoffs, the Highlanders are 4-1 and the Reds are 4-3. The series starts in New York where the Highlanders are 2-0 and the Reds are on the road where they are 2-2. Todays match up has NLCS hero Beany Jacobson (2-1 2.05) of the Reds facing Harry Howell (2-0 1.89). The Highlanders have the advantage in the rotation, the bullpen, defense and the lineup. The Highlanders should be able to dominate the series. Prediction: 4-0 Highlanders
Game 1:
The New York Highlanders have listened all week as the experts, fans, and newspaper men have told them and everyone who will listen that the Reds are just a small stepping stone to their evenutal third championship. Everyone has been talking about how powerfl the Highlanders are and one has to wonder how much of this is going to their heads.
No one expected the Reds to put up this much of a fight sending the game to the 12th inning before losing. This is the sort of game the Reds must win in order to win the series. They have to take advantage of the games that are close. Harry Howell got the win pushing his 1907 playoff record to 3-0 with a 12 inning performance spreading out 11 hits and giving up 4 earned runs. Hal Chase, of the Reds, went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and Fred Merkle, of the Highlanders, went 3 for 6 with 2 runs scored. Beany Jacobson proved once again he is a top flight pitcher and a big game pitcher going 11.2 innings and spreading 15 hits out giving up 5 runs (only 4 earned). This pitching match up will go down as one of the best pitching duels ever and one of the best played World Series games. Not one single person of the 15,945 fans left a second early. The excitement was felt throughout the stadium and even by the fans standing on the streets trying to catch a glimpse of the game. The Highlanders play one more game in NY before heading to Cincy.
Game 2:
The New York Highlanders were riding a high after Game 1 and they felt pretty good about sending former Red Jesse Tannehil to the mound (1-1 1.14) to face Oscar "Flip Flap" Jones (1-2 3.16). The Highlanders are now 3-0 in the 1907 playoffs and 5-1 overall. If the Highlanders can win this game, they will head back to Cincinnati with a 2-0 lead and dread in the hearts of the Reds players.
Despite Reds SS John Knight going 3 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBI and a run scored, the Highlanders ran rough road over the Reds. Harry "Judge" Lumley went 3 for 5 with a HR, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored and a walk to boot. Bill Hinchman added a 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders were able to jump out on Oscar Jones for 4 runs in the first and the Reds bounced back with 3 in the second. Jones only lasted 2.2 innings giving up 9 hits and 6 runs all earned. Chappie McFarland entered the game and didn't add a whole lot lasting only 3 innings and giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits. This was an unmitigated disaster for the Reds pitching. Tanny was nearly perfect as normal and for a player no one wanted in the off season is leading his team to the World Series trophy.
Game 3:
The New York Highlanders are sitting in a great position after taking two from the Reds in New York. Overconfidence is really the only thing that can bring this team down that is on the road to a PBA leading third World Championship.
Due to their lead in the series, the Highlanders have decided to send Knuckes (Eddie Cicotte) to the mound. It gives Howell and Tanny another day of rest and Knuckles record so far in the playoffs has been wonderful (1-0 2.00). The Reds are in a pinch so they are sending their workhorse to the mound. Noodles Hahn will take the mound and attempt to pitch the Reds back into the series. He has been good in the playoffs so far in limited in pitching (1-0 3.00). It seems the Reds are pressing and the Highlanders are settling back. Is this a receipe for disaster?
Noodles stepped up again and was named player of the game for going a complete game scattering 10 hits around and only giving up 3 earned runs. Harry Wolter, the rookie sensation, went 3 for 3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Ed Phelps came alive also going 2 for 5 with a triple!, a RBI, and a run scored. Knuckles pitched well going a complete game, but the Reds were able to get the hits that drove in runs even if the number of hits was not great. The clutch hitting of the Reds have carried them all year, but you can't rely on that all the time because at some point people will make outs with runners on base. 13,060 showed up in Cincinnati to show their support for their team. Many predicted the building may be empty, but when the Reds players came out for their workout before the game they were met by a full house.
Both teams need to play their game and continue to pitch well. The Highlanders have given the Reds a small breath of fresh air. It may cost them in the end...although it is not likely.
Game 4:
Are the Reds for real or just lucky? That is the question that will be answered today. Both teams are attempting to send their best to the mound. The Highlanders send Harry Howell (3-0 2.32) and the Reds send Beany Jacobson (2-2 2.37) to the mound to battle for their respected clubs. The record for each team for the playoffs is striking: 6-2 for NY and 5-5 for Cincinnati.
The Reds had lighting in their bats today and they scored early and often. John Titus, the rugged veteran, went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 RBI and scored a run. He was named player of the game for his oustanding performance. Beany pitched a complete game giving up only 7 hits and 1 ER. The 13,195 fans rocked the house as Harry Howell was lit up like one of those new stop lights you might see in the big cities. Howell gave up 10 hits only 3.1 IP and the Reds scored 8 times on him. Wish Egan entered the game and shut the Reds down, but it was too late for the Highlanders. Harry Wolter continues to hit for the Reds going 1 for 4 to bring his playoff address to .382 (the only Red with a average above .300, heck above .267). The Highlanders got nothing from the top of their order as Ed Phelps and Fred Merkle were a combined 0 for 8. The Highlanders have lost two straight and seem to be way overconfident. The Reds just might be for real afterall.
Game 5:
During the pregame workout, the Highlanders did not look happy or all that loose. After two embarrassing losses, manager John McGraw is not letting them lose sight of their goals. The NY franchise seem to be all business now and that could be trouble for the Reds. The Reds toyed with the idea of letting Noodles pitch in this game, but decided he would pitch game 6 leaving (if there is one!) Beany for a possible Game 7. Jones has been anything but good so far in this years playoffs (1-3 4.76). The Highlanders have the best pitcher in the PBA Jesse Tannehill (2-1 2.03) going to the mound so the advantage has to be to NY.
Tanny did exactly what everyone thought he would do and that is pitch a complete game. He only gave up a single run all game and spread those 7 hits out pretty thin. Today, everything was about the Highlanders. 3b Jim Delahanty went 3 for 4 and scored 2 runs on grit alone. 1b/C Ed Phelps went 2 for 5 with a RBI. For the Reds, Flip Flap looked flat as pancake again going 8.1 innings but giving up 11 hits, 7 runs (4 earned) and his season is now done no matter what. His 4.66 ERA for the playoffs is horrible and he just might have cost his team a World Series. The 12,977 fans in attendance refused to boo poor Jones, but he could feel the pity in their cheering. It seems the Reds are hit or miss at the plate, while the Higlanders are hitting everything. This series may be over now with the Highlanders needing one more game to finish this off.
Game 6:
It could all come down to a game in New York in front of their hometown fans. In a do or die game, the Reds are calling on SP Noodles Hahn to carry the team. He is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA this playoff run and that is just a tad better than Harry Howell (3-1 3.67) who is taking the mound for the Highlanders. The Reds at this point are playing .500 baseball (6-6) in the playoffs which is not very good for a team two wins away from winning the World Series, but that is how their entire season has gone. They win just enough to get the job done. They won a one game playoff to make the playoffs, then beat the Pirates in 7, and are now taking the Highlanders to the brink (or near it I guess).
All the pre-game talk about the Reds being battlers just didn't carry over. Harry Howell went the full 9 innings and only gave up a single run. 3b Jim Delahanty added a 2 for 4 game with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Even light hitting Whitely Alperman went 2 for 5 with a double and a RBI and scored 2 runs.
The third inning was just too much for the Reds where the Highlanders were able to score 6 runs and thus ending the Reds hope to push a Game Seven. The decision to start Noodles looked like a great one, but he only lasted 2.2 innings and gave up 7 runs on 7 hits. Reulbach was sent in as his relief and pitched well, but the damage was done. No one was more disappointed than Noodles himself. After the game, he was quoted, " I let my team down. I let my teammates down. I let the entire city down." This is just another reason why Noodles is no loved in Cincinnati.
Except for Lumley, every single Highlander got a hit today; every single Highlander did get on base. The NY Highlanders have won their third World Series in 7 years.
