End of Season:
AL East:
The AL East ended with a bang. The Americans and the A's put up a valiant fight up until the last day of the season. The A's and Americans both finished the season on an 8-2 record, while the Highlanders skidded into the playoffs with an 2-8 record. If the season was just a tad longer, the Highlanders could have easily bee on the outside looking in.
The AL East might be coming down to the wire, but who is going to win is no longer really in doubt. The Highlanders might have lost 5 in a row to end the week, but their magic number is 3 and the A's are sitting 6 long games back. The Americans put on a great showing by going 8-2 this week, but second place is the best they can do at this point. The Senators are going to end the season with the worst record and the top pick in next years draft.
AL West:
The Tigers won the division without much of a fight by the other owners. The Naps ended up besting the Browns, mostly due to the lack of fight by Browns management. The Tigers are not considered a powerhouse going into the playoffs at all.
The Tigers ended up being the first team to clinch, but that had a lot to do with a very weak division. The Naps have been surging, but a 3-7 week ended any late season heroics. The Browns still have a shot at second if they want it, but they have been way too quiet for way too long.
NL East:
The Superbas ran out of gas at the end of the season going 3-7 and finishing in third place behind the surging Beaneaters. The Beaneaters finsihed on a 9-1 clip and 2 games behind the Pirates. After last seasons collapse of the Pirates many forsaw the same thing occuring as the Superbas and the Beaneaters continued to close the game. The Pirates end the season tied with the Highlanders for the best recorrd in the PBA.
The Pirates needed a good week and/or a bad one from the Superbas to slide into the playoffs. They didn't play very well (they no longer have the best record in the PBA) going only 5-5, but the Superbas also only went 5-5 and didn't really make up any ground. The Superbas made some good moves this year, but it ended up being a tad too late. If they would have made a move in the preseason or earlier, things might be different. They still have a shot sitting 5 games back, but the Pirates have a magic number of 4. The Beaneaters have to be in this conversation after a 9-1 week and only 6 games back. I'd pencil the Pirates into the playoffs.
NL West:
The Cubs did everything they could to give the division away losing their last 5 games and going 2-8 for the week. The Reds battled hard going 7-3, but another win would have made them division champs. Even so, the season ended on a tie with both team required to play a one game playoff for all the marbles. The winner moves on to face the Pirates and seem to be chicken feed for the much more powerful franchise.
The Cubs did everything but give their division lead away. With a 2-8 week, things could not be much worse for them. The Redsd would have been better off with a tad better record, but a 6-4 record had them gaining ground. The Cubs have lost 5 in a row and with a magic number of 5, it is unlikely they will miss the playoffs.
