One Game Playoff:
Chicago Cubs vs Cincinnati Reds:
Pre Game: The NL West has been a wild ride all year and predictably there is a one game playoff due to the collapse of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs had the division locked up only to stumble during the last 20 days of the season and the Reds won enough to tie for the lead. One game playoff, here we come!
Todays game is going to give us Rookie Jim Holmes against the veteran Noodles Hahn. Hahn has the playoff experience while Holmes is straight from AAA. Will Holmes be able to ignore his situation (too naive to notice?) and beat out the Reds Ace Hahn who has struggled all season? The Cubs have shook up their lineup and hope it will be enough. The Reds are relying on their lineup to score some runs as they are going to have to cut cost this off season. This is the last hurrah for a team that has been fun to watch.
Post Game:
Noodles has not pitched up to his normal standards this season (15-15 3.00) but the entire season is riding on his arm. And he paid the Reds confidence back in spades. He went a complete game giving up a single run (earned) and pitched circles around the rookie. Holmes only lasted 4 innings and gave up 8 runs, but only 3 were earned; so one can hardly blame him. Overall took over the pitching duties giving up 3 runs more and letting the Reds walk into the playoffs. The hitting of the Reds came alive with Milan getting 2 hits (and 2 RBI), Wolter with 2 hits, and Steinfeld with 2 more also. The rookies really have kept this team and franchise alive.
