Giants Start the Fire Sale:
This off season the Brooklyn Superbas decided to pass on future HOF starting pitcher, Jesse Tannehill. They did spend a lot of money on SP Pink Hawley and 2b Nap Lajoie. They thought signing Pink and Nap would propel them to the top of the division and both have been outstanding. Yet, they've found the team short a top of the rotation ace. They may have made the most important trade in the history of the franchise.
The Superbas decided this week they want to be a winning franchise and be on the list of World Series Champions. They took a huge step towards that goal over the weekend. They traded AA SP prospect Ed Summers and OF Steve Evans. Summers is a decent enough prospect, but he is not a sure bet to ever make the majors. Evans was the number 4 pick in the draft. When many thought the Superbas would take SP Smokey Joe Wood, instead they took a hitter and many scratched their head. Now we know why; they probably had a deal worked out with the Giants to get 3 pitchers to add to their rotation.
Now that we have talked about what they gave up, what did they get? A combination of Dummy Deegan (7-8 2.28), Dale Gear (1-3 3.48), Frank Dupree (4-1 2.70), and Ed Delahanty (.205). Deegan could step in right away as the ace of the Superbas staff. McGinnity has been very good this year, but his ERA is slowly rising to where it should be. Gear is a proven commidoty in the playoffs and Frank Dupree is a solid veteran. The Superbas gave up two players with zero time in the majors and got some veterans that should be able to help them win.
