More evidence that draft compensation isn't perfect - even though I'm still in favor of it.
Two players on my team are Type A free agents, as of November 06.
Ossee Schreckengost - C Bill Carrick - P
I like Ossee. He closed on a hot streak, and I hope he wins another Gold Glove, but he's not Type A in my mind. He's listed 8th among PBA catchers right now.
I put Carrick about two rungs below Ossee, even though I traded for him a year ago.

Even More evidence!
Joe Yeager pitched 1.2 innings this last season and is rated #3 among MR. He is a type A. Pete Dowling had a 2.34 ERA and a 1.09 whip is a type A but is not rated at all. Wellie Keeler hit .290 with a VORP of 20.5 is not rated but is a type A.
Even stranger, Chief Bender (POY in the AL) is only ranked 10th.
Frankly, I don't understand any of it!

For the Browns there's at least a bit of an explanation. May not explain a ton, but: OOTP rates pitchers by staff, and makes a quick determination of who might be the ace as an SP, MR and Closer - so only one person per team gets identified. The game probably (I don't know the formula) takes an average of all the pitchers with the appropriate position designation, so the pitching position ratings often look out of whack. Even with 1.2 innings, Yeager was the Browns' most used MR in 06. On the free agent side of the equation - if the game likes his ratings and potential, he can earn an individual Type A tag, even with limited experience. Dowling is rated, as part of the staff with Bender as the ace. The Browns have seven pitchers listed as SP, so that probably dilutes the overall position ratings. At least the game is sensible enough to give Dowling a Type A tag as an individual. Keeler is competing with Doyle as the Browns' listed 2B. I agree with the game that Doyle is the best option, but Keeler has the performance record to be a Type A. Bender isn't ranked 10th. The Browns SPs are ranked 10th. Bender may count as little as 1/7th of the Browns' overall starter rating. At least the game is smart enough to recognize him as the ace. But as far as I'm concerned, the Browns SP performance in '06 should earn them much better than a #10 ranking. OOTP could do a much better job, simply listing staffs by their cumulative starter ERA. I tend to ignore the pitcher rankings.
